Windows Live OneCare v2.0 Help Website

I designed this website workflow for Microsoft Live OneCare during the winter and spring of 2007.

The goals were to:

  • Lower Microsoft's support costs.
  • Create a website that encouraged users to send Microsoft valuable data about their operating system for application troubleshooting.
  • Improve perceived service quality.

This website successfully accomplished those goals.

The bottom part of this web page was designed by me. The top part of the web page was designed by another Program Manager. This was the last project I worked on prior to leaving Microsoft.

Page 1: Opt-in to Diagnostics Upload

Our business goal when designing this workflow was to get users to provide us with their Vista diagnostics. Therefore we made the opt-in scenario very easy by using a simple checkbox and a friendly explanation of its purpose to the user.

The goal for every website is different. As a designer, I take into account the website's specific goals and design accordingly.

Page 2: Ask Permission to Collect Data

Because Microsoft has strict policies regarding collecting customer data, this screen was displayed to the customer. I explain to the customer what we are doing with his data and how to proceed.

Page 3: Progress Page

Some steps required that the user wait a few seconds. This screen was displayed to explain to the customer why he is waiting.

External Workflow

To finish the workflow, we then launched the Vista MSDC tool. This tool was not designed by me. It was designed by the Microsoft Windows Diagnostics team.
