What to know before choosing a web designer

Choosing the right person to design your website is one of the most important decisions any business owner has to make. It is one of the main ways you are going to get your name out there and show off everything you have to offer. If your site is complicated, unorganized or not appealing to the eye, this could possibly turn people away. So, how do you go about finding the right person when there are so many people out there? How do you know you can trust someone when you don’t know them? While there is always a bit of a gamble involved, these tips should help to get you in the right direction.

See samples of their work

One of the most important things you can do when trying to find a website designer is check out their portfolio. Without seeing what they have previously created, you won’t really have any way to go about figuring out how experienced they are. If you can find a person who specializes in a certain type of site or niche, this can be beneficial but isn’t a requirement. It all depends on your personal preferences. A lot of picking the right person has to do with going with your gut.

Talk to references

Now that you have seen samples, it’s time to ask to speak with references. While this may seem a bit pushy, you are technically trying to hire them for a job so this is a necessary step. Even if you have to make up a story about how you had a bad experience in the past, go ahead. It’s not as if they are going to know the difference. Do whatever makes you the most comfortable.

Shop around for the best pricing

Once you have decided you like a person, do not stop there. While it may seem like a ‘no-brainer’ to go with the first person that you find and like; there are many others out there so give yourself a few options. A lot of the time, you may be able to find someone who will be willing to do the job for much cheaper. We know how business is and any money you can save is a big deal; so give yourself the luxury of having many people to choose from.

There are free options, so you don’t have to pay a dime unless you want to

Keep in mind; you don’t necessarily have to hire someone to do the job for you. These days, there are many free options that allow anyone to create sites. Even if you have literally zero experience; you may just be able to get the job done. At least check sites like WordPress out to see if they have what you are looking for. This alone could save you quite a bit of money not only for the initial fees but for the monthly or yearly costs as well. Plus, they’re a great place to start and make mistakes, change things etc…

Using a grid for your web design

The use of grids is very common in the web designing industry. While grids were initially used for graphic designing only, their convenience has led to immense popularity in web design. By definition, a grid is a framework of pixels that run vertically and horizontally. They make up the layout for the pages of a website. By working with a grid, a web designer can conveniently decide where to place different items on a page. A grid makes it easy to place different components on a webpage and, therefore, quickens the web designing process.

Advantages of using grids

There are several reasons grids should be used when designing a website. For one, they can make a website look fairly organized. A major problem with several websites is the fact that they are stuffed with content. The images are wrongly placed, thus giving the webpage a clustered look. By using a grid, you can make sure that all the items are rightly placed according to a defined layout. It can allow you to decide how to place the essential items on a page. It will also make you realize that you can not place every bit of content you have and, therefore, will allow you to single out the unnecessary parts.

By using a grid appropriately, a web designer can make the finished website look highly attractive.  Another major advantage of using a grid is that it provides the base for a website’s design. This means that if you need to update your website or to change some components in future, you can simply do this by using the grid. Changes can be made comfortably, since a grid will provide the basic framework you need.

Limitations of using grids

While using grids is a great way to design a website, the method has its limitations. A major limitation is the fact that you can only work with a provided framework. This means that there is not much room for creativity. You can not think out of the box or place items in a different layout. You will have to follow the pixels provided by the grid. Because of this, grids cannot be used for all websites, especially for those that need to be highly unique and creative.

Moreover, a grid has certain essential requirements. For one, you need to have a sufficient amount of content to put in the grid. If, therefore, you are designing pages that have minimal content, a grid should not be used. This is because a small amount of content can be placed effectively even without the use of a grid. Also, if you are planning to design an abstract website, a grid will limit your options.

Using grids in web design, therefore, can certainly ensure that you will end up with a neat and well-organized site. However, the method has its limitations and can not be used for all kinds of websites. If your web content is insufficient, for example, grids can not help you.
